Yes, I know, Victoria isn’t an area it’s a station. However, many people do look to it as some form of locality and for our purposes we’ll treat it as such.
Essentially we are talking about the areas bordering Victoria Street. To the south are the huge Victorian mansion flats in roads such as Carlisle Place, Morpeth Terrace and or course the renowned Ashley Mansions in Thirleby Street. These are luxurious red brick buildings housing extremely generous flats that are very much of that age but still popular today. |
To the north there is essentially a mix of modern apartment buildings muddled in with some quaint and even historic houses, mostly around Palace Street.
But Victoria is mostly known for its Street, a prime shopping street leading from the station up to Parliament Square. The grand old lady of the area has always been the Army & Navy (now House of Fraser) department store, located at the junction of Artillery Row and this, until recent times, has been the main draw.
Of late, a shopping revival of sorts has occurred with the creation of Cardinal Place – a major development opposite Westminster Cathedral and an enormous undertaking comprising a shopping arcade with cafés and restaurants dividing two spectacular glass-walled buildings. Here you can find the likes of Marks & Spencer, Molton Brown, Zara, Monsoon, L’Occitane, TM Lewin and Jones bootmaker. |

It is a pleasant environment centred on a public piazza and has been immediately popular. www.cardinalplace.co.uk

Victoria rail station or London Victoria to use its official title was opened in 1862 and is one of the main London termini serving Kent, Surrey and Sussex, in addition to being the departure point for the Gatwick Express and the more famous Orient Express. It processes over 60 million journeys every year and utilises 19 platforms. Victoria underground station is adjacent, again one of the busiest and serves the circle line, the district line and of course the Victoria line. |
Nearby is the third Victoria station, the coach station in Buckingham Palace Road. It is the largest and most significant coach station in London serving all parts of the UK, as well as mainland Europe. |
